Which Logo Do You Like Best (I SUCK At Graphic Design)

Note: Thanks to EVERYONE for your input.  Here’s how the voting broke down: E (64 votes) ; A (51 votes); C (24 votes); D (18 votes); and (B with 12 votes).  These votes included email replies and tweets.  So we’re happy to announce that E will be our logo for the upcoming launch.

View Project Mojave Logos

So . . .

. . . Project Mojave is Launching in 11 Days and I had the genius idea to redo our look and feel before everything goes live.

Brilliant.

Anyway, since I have the aesthetic sensibilities of a bat (and that’s being generous), I wanted your opinion on the following 5 logos.

I’d be super grateful for your help by ranking them in the comments. (If were up to me I’d probably chose an ugly font and write “Project Mojave” with it and be done with it . . . oh wait, that’s what I did the first time).

I’m less concerned about “graphic integrity,” “aesthetic consistency” and that nonsense.

Mostly I want to know that you that YOU feel most represents Project Mojave.

So here they are (thanks to Tracy for helping me select these 5 logos from the original batch).

Logo A

logo1

Logo B

logo2

Logo C

logo3

Logo D

logo4

Logo E

logo5

Oh yeah, I and want to be clear about the fact that I did NOT make these.

Anyway, I seriously need your help.  Or at least the graphically incompetent part of my brain does.

Thanks a ton,

Clay

P.S. Don’t think about it too much.  Just go with your gut.

  • C is my favorite, I love the FEEL of it
  • S.A.S.
Logo A, but: I would not show the eagle neither the fingers. I would put a background picture of the real mojave desert. Good luck.
  • A
    C
    E
    D
    B

But I suck at this too :-)
  • V.C.
I like logo B best, because it depicts a bird flying = freedom.

Logo A I like second. But it looks like this one's going to win, anyway.
  • Burl
    C
    E
    the rest
  • Daan
Logo D looks cleanest and most appealing to me. I would change the font to something cleaner though.
In general, I think your setting yourself up for being dated really fast with all of these grungy and/or handdrawn fonts. They're hip now (although already getting pretty tired,) but doomed to look dated in no time. For a logo, I feel you should really aim for something more timeless. I think logo D is well on its way to be a timeless logo.

    Logo A
  • Steve Early
My original reaction was "D", but the more I looked at them I decided I like "E" best.

I know I definitely like "A" the least - thought it was ....ummm ... a little too 60's-ish? I dunno. That's how it hit me. I lived in California in the early to mid 70's and it brings back memoris of Caesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers or something. Maybe it's just me.
  • Brian
    C feels natural.
  • So, did you do that artwork yourself? If so, are you taking clients? Damn that is good work.
  • Mike
    "D" first, then "E"
  • Richard Navetta
Your current one is better than any of these shown. These look a bit amateurish. The Bird and the Tree. very simple and easy to remember. An easy imprint on the brain!
  • Ricardo Diaz
I also like A the most!
  • Chris
    I like A!
  • Ken Duncan
Logo E is the choice for me.
  • Grey
    Favorite, most-to-least:

    E
    A
    D
    C
    B
  • Lluis C.
    A and C rock!
  • Noahm
    First choice: E

    Runner-up: A
  • I like the first one, A :) it's nice and clean looking
  • B - selected by someone under the age of 30 (fan of QOTSA, musician, cynic)
B- selected by someone over the age of 50- 55 (engineer, sales type and social media wannabe)

B- selected by someone over the age of 55 (musician, teacher, philosopher, beekeeper)

Just in case you are interested in the demographics

E is overal the best. A is a clipart rip-off.
  • Bman
Most def A... It's all about throwing that toxic workplace the peace out sign!!!
  • Nick
I think A is your strongest one right now. The thing that sticks out to me in terms of design is the "echo" you've got going on with the letter O,(also J...pr-oj-ect m-oj-ave), in how you made it the O in 'project' bold.

I think the top of the logo(with the "peace" hand signal) actually may be a little distracting. The upward swoop of the wings seems to be pulling the viewer away from what you want them to see-project mojave. The shape of the design is nice in the sense of the triangle, but when you look at a triangle you look at the peek in the end. Unless your main message is at the top of your triangle design, you may want to consider what you are truly trying to say and how your trying to say it. It may also seem a irrelevant once the viewer reads the lettering, and they may (unconsciously) ask "what does the that peace symbol symbolize?"

B looks good, but a little disjointed. The elements(the little pictures mainly) don't seem to gel together as a unit, and it feels a little disconnected.

C has a great integrated feel. This one is accutually the most succint and symmetrical I think. I think you may just have to question the "mood' or feeling you want to give off.

D is simple. Simple could work. My eye goes to the bird first though. I think this is because the eye goes to stark, recognizable pictures and symbols. The lettering is great though. Hmmm, how would you integrate that bird? Where do you want the eye to focus?

E is cool. It feels a little lacking bland the longer I look at it. I think the word that comes to mind when I look at is..."functional"-which may not be a bad thing.
  • smartfamilytips
I like E far better than the others.
  • Spike
A makes me nervous--what are the splatters? Blood? Whatever a freedom business is, I'm not sure I want to check it out if it causes blood loss. And what happened to "f*ck the social revolution?" Looks like you just stole an army-navy surplus jacket on your way to the protest.

I personally like the logo you already have, but I'd go with E. The "colored in" look of E makes me think of someone designing something for construction--and that's what you're encouraging your viewer to do, right?--whereas the "worn" look of some of the other fonts makes me think of really having to struggle to keep something together, or being emotionally battered--when I think business, I want something solid.

P.S. My husband says they all look like beer labels, but he didn't tell me whether he'd try your beer.
  • Tom
    C. C is the only one that resonates with me.
    A. A grabbed my attetion... but I think C conveys a more powerful/subliminal message.
  • Pat
I would have to go with A. the rest are bleh and have too much going on
  • I vote for E.

    IMHO:
A is cool, but gives a sense of violence. I get that it's meant to convey the whole "revolution" idea, but it's maybe a little too graphic.

B - I'm not crazy about the "label" font ... I always feel like that's a bit overdone. I also find having two graphic elements (in addition to two type faces) a little bit much.

C - Sorry, but it reminds me too much of a Nazi emblem.

    D - I don't know ... just looks "furry" ;)

    E:
I like that this is an iterative evolution from the current logo (vs a total overhaul).
I think the "sketchy" font works well - conveys a work in progress, planning.
I like the underline on "Freedom Business" - provides a nice anchor to the design.
I like the swallow better than the eagle - to me, that's more evocative of the type of flying
you mean to embody - free, acrobatic, beautiful to watch.
I like the background color as well - the earthier tone is appealing

    Yep. I like E.
    Good luck making a decision!
  • I'm not sure any of them is a minimal and lasting as a strong logo should be, but here goes:

    A. It's the most polished, yes, but I dont like for this at all. Very 2009 and VERY rock show - almost templatey (It's a word, look it up :). I also agree it may be demographically alienating & doesn't seem to represent the project well enough. Strong design, but not for this.

    B. Just not there for me. The "Freedom Business" text is especially disjointed and not as focal as it should be. Too much focus on MOJAVE and the image ... meh.

    C. Looks like it belongs on a t-shirt? Bird is not as dynamic, looks like a scarecrow. Strong points are it looks good in one color and the design is consistent. OK, overall.

    D. ...swap out the eagle for the original swallow. May be what it needs. I do like it otherwise.

    E. My favorite of these. Strong design that fits MP, would look just as good in one color (if not better). May clean up the 3 font-itis, but best potential of all.

So I Guess E - C/D - B - A from best to not so great ... Honestly not sold on any of them - it's not just about the design here, it's about reaching the right group and suiting your own project. A definitely misses those details. E comes closest if you *must* change.

But why not just clean what you have?
  • I like A for a number of reasons. It's clear and easy to read. It stands out. As someone who thinks in advertising terms, the tag line is much more readable and clear in Logo A. Logo C has some of the same aspects, but it somehow comes across as a logo for a horror flick, to me.
  • Aditya Dixit
    it was a difficult choice b/w C & A.
A gives a look of a macho rock band movement
C the eagle gives the feel of someone who is looking at his farm ,waiting for the seeds to bear
    fruit of his industrious preparation.
so i will go with C.
  • Chris
    1. E (prefer the bird from D)
    2. D
    3. A ( might be too tall for a banner)
  • Logo E!
  • Richard Gralewski
A: looks like a rock festival logo, which might work for you if you're after a certain demographic
B: reminded me right away of a beer or liquor ad, so again, depending on who you're after...
C: This one did'nt grab me at first like the other ones did, but it grew on me after awhile and may be my personal favorite. simple, compelling... looks maybe like it could be for a movie, style-wise I mean...which is good, mass appeal wise I mean
D: This one at first glance was like "oh yeah, thats it" like it seemed most appropriate to convey what you're doing, given what I know about the project. It happened to strike me as a natural for some reason... on second glance, I don't like the way the subtext is split by the drop on the letter 'j', and the other ads have subtext issues too, except for C which is well composed
E: Not memorable for me at all. Somewhat confusing visually, Maybe could be turned into something.

    I'd definitely go with C
  • Juliette
Your current logo at the top of the website is by far the best, do not change it!
  • Logo A
  • Logo A for me, although I'm not sure why the O in project is bold
  • Em
I'm with E too and then I like D second. Good Luck!
  • Lisa
    Logo E
  • In order of preference: E, D, A, B, C
  • Jason Hughston
C - dump the yellow background
  • Laura
    D. the eagle is going forward. Keep it simple.
  • In order and with explanation...

I vote for E--it seems the most mature as a design and it gets across what you're doing. You might want to make the tagline all the same color/font to keep things a bit simpler--otherwise you're pointing out "freedom business" with the underine and "in 3 months" with the red. Pick one thing to point out and that's it. I'd say make them the same color, and would be curious to see it with either the red or the dark color. Speaking of, I'd also be curious to see this with only 3 colors (perhaps the gray and black are shades of the same?) so you can see how it'd look printed, particularly without a gradient background--i.e., what you'd expect on stickers and so forth. Anyhow, this is my clear favorite. If you want to fuss a little, I'd be curious of other fonts for the word "project", but I like it.

D gets the message across but it's not as visually interesting as E. I don't like the typography as much either...I'd be curious to see it with a yellow background, but it needs more work than that.

B's tagline is unnecessarily broken up and way too small, the images on the upper right are just sort of thrown in with little connection.

C has a giant eagle for no reason (kind of a cross between a biker patch and Big Brother) and a Microsoft Word "SmartArt" quality stretching of the word Project. Its typography is just bad-bad-bad and the designer was trying too hard without any experience.

While A is interesting, I dislike the peace sign--it may be "nice" but it distracts too much from the core message.
  • In order of preference: E, A, D, B, C.

A and E are both really nice and dynamic. I love the DIY font style on E and I wouldn't mind seeing the bird from D transferred to E. The break between 'freedom' and 'business' on D and the two breaks in the tagline on B look really wonky. Everyone seems to like C, but I find it really dull - the fonts are very 'first thing we found in Microsoft Word' and the curved 'project' is all a bit WordArt. Too school projecty for my liking. The bird and 'mojave' part of C are great but the rest needs to be kicked up a notch if you're going to use it.

And that's my two cents on the matter. :D
  • Adam
    I like A
  • Mercedes
in D, the bird is "flying"...that says "freedom" to me! as opposed to sitting or protecting (like C), and it looks "stronger" than the one in E. the bird is a great focal point...

i also like how the top word is capitalized, while the bottom is lowercase, it adds more differentiation/contrast, making it easier to read. the lowercase of the slogan is easier to read than uppercase.

hands down...the best bird, font, color, balance...it looks like it tilts slightly upward as well...off-centers are always appealing!

and it's even got the registered trademark symbol! whoever made that was good!
  • Amanda
    E, D, C, B, A (from most favorite to least)
  • Laurel Killough
E, definitely E (or D). I agree that A and C are too harsh and don't accurately represent PM. A is especially horrible.
  • I really like A.
    *Jared
  • J.J.
    A. Clearest one that reads "build freedom in 3 months."
  • A or C - 50/50
  • Logo E is my favorite but I am probably biased because it most closely resembles the current theme.
  • Mercedes
D - it "breathes"...i like the white, the varied black and red colors, the bird, and how the words are stacked; uncluttered on the eyes...by far my choice.

A - this was originally my first choice and the most aesthetically appealing to me (as a picture). BUT, i don't really like the peace sign for some reason (that was what my eye was drawn to/the focal point), and that it's only red...needs more color variation.

the white backgrounds are easier on the eyes than the yellow/red combinations.

    yellow/red combinations:
E (the black balances the red, but the words "project mojave" run together which makes it harder to read than the others which are "stacked")
B (the colors are too "flat", darker than E, and the words on the bottom are spaced too far apart)
C (not enough variation in color, but like the design, though it is crowded, so hard to read)

i kind of wonder about the slogan and the project mojave name though, no offense...i wonder if people would perceive what you intend, i just don't know enough about it to judge if it fits well
  • Chris
    Logo C
  • I like E. It doesn't deviate too much from your existing brand and it's stylish, symmetrical, clean, and easy to understand. Just the things a logo should be.
  • krisana
C: Best by far, but I would like a bit more definition in the letters for MOJAVE. It's aggressive, interesting, not too busy, and evocative of that rising out of and above feeling of starting something from new from scratch

E: My second choice: fits with current trends, which may help with adds and marketing

D: Last for me but nice
  • chris
E is the best, then B
just throw out A (what are you thinking?) and then C, you can do it.
D looks like a bumper sticker not a logo

better still, do a hybrid, get your graphics guy to do this:
Take the layout from B ( it is best layout of the bunch), but use the Mojave from E
then use the central glowness from C
"Create a freedom business in 3 months" in black like B but w/ no spaces like in C.

send me a T shirt with that logo on it and I'll wear it

    Thanks
  • A and C are BAD ASS, but they're too harsh IMO. They almost look Soviet.

E best fits the "feel" I believe you have/want for PM. It's the most "free."
  • E, then D.
Or maybe E with the fonts of D... :)
  • Gregory Padilla
    I like A.
  • Cheryl Binnie
I've gotta go with E. I found it easier to read, simply because the words aren't stacked like in some of the others.

Mainly, though, it's the bird. Maybe I've grown attached to the little guy, but I think it gives the logo that feeling of "freedom" that so many people are looking for.
  • Marc
    Logo E
  • I like them in the following order, best logo first:
    E, A, D, C, B

I really like E and A, don't care as much for the rest.
  • janethia
    I like E best
  • Sam
Am I the only one who saw C and thought the eagle was reminiscent of the wartime Nazi eagle emblem? ( http://www.spanishrefugees-basquechildren.org/B... ).

So definitely not C. A was my gut favourite, with all the rest not really grabbing me massively and being equal second.
  • Francis
Logo A. It's got the most personality!
  • E. More personality and dimension.
  • E, then A.
  • A has the greatest visual impact, but makes me think of MTV.

    Choose E.
  • E or D.

Don't spend too much time sweating this, it'll drive you nuts! Make your command decision and put it behind you.
  • Zalary Young
    A
    followed distantly by E
  • Logo D. Flying with the eagles and flying out of the desert to higher and better things.

I don't like any of the others.
  • Here's how I'd rank them...

D - I like the color and simplicity of this one best.
    A
    E
    C
    B
  • Paul
Have to go with A on first impressions.
  • Logos B or E but dump the eagle and that tree. The eagle is too US centric in a world that is global. I see an eagle, I think US and nothing to do with me.

Start with just the type. You will change or tweak later, it's inevitable. And u will find a more universal image.
  • Jackie
E is my favorite, don't love the rest.
  • 'A' looks pretty cool, and I think that should go on our leather jackets when we all quit our jobs and form a badass biker gang.

For a site logo, I like 'D' or 'E' - depends on the color of everything else going on.
  • Deborah
    I like E
  • 'A' for sure. Love the hand.
  • Keith
    Clay,
If you're designing for t-shirts to sell at Nordstrom, go with A. Love it, but just doesn't fit. Same for C -- hot design, but a scary image. Neither of these say anything to me about PM or your assumed target.

E is the best, as far as message. E needs a few tweaks to be "finished," but I think you gotta' have the bird soaring -- it speaks to the freedom message at the core of what you're doing here.
  • C is best
A is awful, is that a peace sign,,, lose A
    good luck with it
do you ever get back to madison for visits?
    take care
    Bry
  • Totally going for A, all the way.
  • Jason
    A or E
  • josh
    logo C for sure.
  • Sheila
A and C on my end.
  • Joan Collins
    D or E
  • Joe
    I like A and C logo.
  • Logo A
  • Logo E .... Best of luck the 2nd go round Clay. Don't let that Director of Ass Kicking hold you back!

    Cheers!
  • David
    Nope. Sigh....
  • David
Okay - answered my own question. Gravatar - www.gravatar.com - is the commenting plugin you're using, and God Bless Me, I must have signed up a while back. Let's see if we get my beautiful mug on this one.

    David

P.S. Sorry for this off-topic, me-centric nonsense. This is the last of it. I promise. Really.
  • First Choice: C

    Second Choice: E
  • Joshua
    I like logo C.
  • Brett Stark
    Definitely E.
  • I like E & A, in that order.
  • Ms Constantine
    In order of preference.
    E
    D
    B
    C
    A
  • E's my fave but A and D come in as close seconds...

My only "hell no!" is C. Looks like a biker bar...
  • A - it's the only one with a human element in it, and I think that's important to what you're doing.
  • Rich
    Hey Clay

Actually who gives a rip about what we think

What does your target market think / like?

    that's the money ?

    Rich
  • Rich
    A

because its graphically 'clean' & it gets the message across the best

    E
would be next, but a fair way after.
  • Ugo
    E, D, A
  • It's between C & E for me, though I like A... except there's something about it that bothers me.
  • A then E the others are just... Well they don't do much for me.
  • Sarah
    Definitely -A-
  • Tracy
I like A the best.... then after A I guess I like E... no opinion other than that.
  • I like C and A
  • Clay
Thank so much for all the feedback. Please keep it coming . . . I'm going to tally the results and make a decision tomorrow.

    Thanks a ton,
    Clay
  • A and only A.
if you don't do A...strip out the yellow - it makes it look like a cocktail mix.
    A.
  • Logo C all the way!
  • 1st choice is E.

2nd choice is B (although I do not like the text across the bottom 'split' into 3, it looks crap!)

    :-)
  • Claire
    A!
  • webbyandme
I like E for these reasons. The typography looks balanced, it draws the eye but doesn't dominate and I think that is a good thing. It looks like it could be useful for many purposes. And I went with my gut reaction and my guts likes it.
  • David
Another question - totally off the topic. I mean TOTALLY.

What powers the commenting feature of your blog? Because see that picture of me up there? Well, that ain't me! It's actually a picture of an old client of mine, who I must have signed up for some social networking service or something, but using my name (yes, I have done a fair amount of "ghosting" in my storied career as a consultant).

Anyway, it just kills me because I'm SO much better looking, and SO much younger than that dude (great guy though he is). Plus, you know, my BRAND, dude. My fucking BRAND! Anyway, can you direct me to the right portal so I can grace you all with my lovely visage in the future? Thanks!
  • David
Oof. I hate this part. Everyone has a different reaction (emotional) and then justifies it (rational) with a different "reason" related to the original question (I am no exception). Kinda like purchasing behavior, isn't it?

Nonetheless, I've tried to divorce myself from my "taste" and give you some reasonably objective feedback. I feel that the designer/s was/were too focused on conveying "Mojave" and not enough on conveying "freedom." Although "Mojave" is a great hook - like "Make money with 'Project Mojave?' Sounds like a government rocket testing thing or a program to give Native Americans their land back. I'm gonna have to check this out...." - it isn't really what the brand is about. The brand is "freedom business" - that's the overt benefit. That's the real point of differentiation. That's what you're all about - creating a freedom business. Not "making a million dollars on the Internet and buying a mansion and a yacht." Real freedom.

And while it's true that A attempts to emphasize "freedom," the image is of the triumphant peace sign carries way too much cultural baggage, and therefore has too much potential to resonate in wildly different ways with different audiences. Not to mention that in this iteration the wings/feathers are not clearly such, and paint splatter is too "punk attitude." And besides, THIS freedom is not at all the kind of freedom you espouse. This is like "viva la revolución" - not the gentle, somewhat introspective vibe (with a healthy dose of humorous, moderately profane self-deprecation) that I have always gotten from you (and which appealed to me in the first place).

I always liked the original (current) logo because there is that "bird soaring free over the empty desert" thing. If I were forced to choose one of the above, it would be E, simply because of the bird in that takeoff (to freedom) angle, beginning to soar (to freedom). If I were one of the "stakeholders" on the project, my design recommendation would be to refocus some energy on the notion of freedom, the bird, the desert... those things that more universally represent freedom, without the "attitude" of A.

Voilà. As usual, I have gone on far too long. Bye now.
  • Randy Lee
I vote for A, hands down. D is great, if it had a little more going on, but A wins out.
  • I like the E with the bird flying from projet to Mojave.
  • I feel that Logo C represents strength and freedom which is what this is all about.
  • Mr-Crash
    Definitely A.
    E would be 2nd preference.
    C and B are ok
    D is not
  • I say either C or D. (Just please not B.)

    Thanks!
  • joy
personally, i like E. i like the "hand drawn" look, plus the way the tagline reads/is broken up emphasizes your message in a more impactful way than the others. i'm also a fan of lowercase letters in a logo. unfortunately, this one is quite long and if you need to shrink it, the tagline will become unreadable quickly.

i like the compactness of D, but the tagline is broken up oddly so you stumble between "freedom" and "business." this would probably give you the most flexibility with usage since it's smaller.

if you go with A, there is an extra space between "build" and "a" that should be deleted. the advantage with this logo that if you have to make it smaller, the words will probably be best read. not sure why the "o" in "project" is bolded.

B/C are my least favorite. definitely not a fan of the curved "project."

i see someone likes the existing logo...you could just make the tagline span the entire length of the project name in a complementary typeface and you're good to go.
  • Rolf
I say A! that was my first thought when seeing the five.
  • I like A the best.

C is a contender, but I don't like "Project" over the top.
  • dave
    I Like A.
    It catches the eyeballs.
  • margo
    Logo A :)
  • Option A is the easiest to read, the simplest, most consistent and most eye-catching. Option B would be my second choice if you made the words at the bottom come together. Odd as-is.
  • Logo E or A
  • Definitely: E.
  • I like A the best in terms of design, but in terms of what suits the project best I'd say D or C.

D would be a whole lot easier to work with (the color scheme and size would make it much easier to use in different formats, media, etc). You could even animate it fairly easily (have the camera follow the bird as it soars into the logo).

Something else you want to think about when developing a logo like this is being able to make a smaller version...some piece of the logo that you can break off and use independently, but still have it be recognizable. For D it would be the bird. It would be a little trickier for C, since the bird is a little more integrated and less a separate entity.
  • I like E. It says FREEDOM to me.

A, do it. It visually says what you want it to more than the others do.
  • A, E, C, D, B (but please not B) :-)

#1 - logo E (like the sketched style of "mojave" and this bird)
    #2 - logo B

I like A, but I would tweak it. I am a graphic designer. Lemme know and I can help you.

    I like C and E.
  • Well, I hate to say it but I'm not in love with any of them .. but the one I like best (or dislike least) is E.

I actually prefer the one we have at the moment over any of them tho - sorry :P

  • Definitely A
  • E is great. D is not bad.

    C
    D
    B
  • E or A
  • I think "A" would be the best. This design is eye catching (good for advertising), is least cluttered, and most concise in message. It would also work very well in sleek ruby on rails type web design. If I were Stumbling and came across this logo on a page I'd stop and look through the site.

    Ranking: E, D, B, C, A

Comment: I like the format of E with the fonts for "Project Mojave" of B.
  • I am also a fan of A and C. Just wanted to add my two cents in case you're still working on this!

    A
  • A or C, though I don't care for the word "Project" curving over the top in C. None of them are really ideal in the sense that they explain what the project is, even with the slogan included.
